The Carolina Bucket List: 7 Courses You Need to Play Before You Die

Back to Journal

From the Sandhills to the coast, North Carolina has some of the best golf in the country. We ranked the ones worth the drive.

North Carolina doesn't get enough credit as a golf destination. Everyone talks about Pebble Beach, Bandon Dunes, Augusta. But the Tar Heel State has been quietly producing some of the best golf in the country for over a century. From the Sandhills to the coast, here are seven courses you need to play before you die.

1. Pinehurst No. 2 — Pinehurst, NC

The cathedral of American golf. Donald Ross's masterpiece. The crowned greens, the wiregrass rough, the history — there's nothing like it. If you only play one course in North Carolina, make it this one.

2. Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club — Southern Pines, NC

Another Ross gem, and arguably the most underrated course in the Sandhills. The Inn is beautiful, the pace is relaxed, and the golf is everything you want it to be.

3. Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club — Southern Pines, NC

Three US Women's Opens. A Ross design that rewards smart, patient golf. The kind of course that makes you want to stay for a week.

4. Tobacco Road Golf Club — Sanford, NC

The most unusual course on this list. Mike Strantz carved it out of an old tobacco farm and the result is something you've never seen before. Blind shots, dramatic elevation changes, and a layout that demands your full attention.

5. Bald Head Island Club — Bald Head Island, NC

You take a ferry to get here. That alone makes it worth the trip. The golf is excellent, the setting is stunning, and the whole experience feels like a proper escape.

6. Grandfather Golf & Country Club — Linville, NC

Mountain golf at its finest. The elevation, the views, the cool air even in August. If you've never played golf in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this is where you start.

7. The Country Club of North Carolina — Pinehurst, NC

Two courses, both excellent. The Dogwood course is the standout — long, demanding, and beautiful. The kind of place that makes you feel like a member even when you're just a guest.
